Moms, we only have a week and a half until we indulge the men in our lives on Father's Day!! Whether it is Dad, Granddad, Uncle, or Friend, surely there is a man in your child's life who would cherish a sweet gift from your little ones! We are going to post a few ideas, and feel free to comment with ideas of your own for your fellow PRS Moms to glean from!

1) Father's Day Time Capsule:

Start this project a week ahead, so you only have to make one item per day - it also keeps your little one thinking about Dad all week long...

You need:

  • Coffee can, oatmeal container, or Pringles can
  • Recent photo of your child (or better yet, one of child and Dad together)
  • Construction paper or other paper
  • Crayons, markers
  • White paper

What to do:

  1. Cut construction paper to fit around the can like a covering, glue picture to paper and have child decorate with crayons or markers, including date - June 17, 2012. Title the page "A Time Capsule for Dad"
  2. Glue construction paper to the can.
  3. Include these items in the can (and add some special ones of your own)
  • Child's handprint (paint the palm of hand with washable paint and press on paper, label with date)
  • Child's footprint (made the same way)
  • A biography page about Dad and child - suggested items to include - "My dad is ___years old. He weighs ___lbs and is ___feet tall. His hair is ___ and his eyes are ___. My dad likes to _________________, he likes to wear _________, his favorite food is _____, his favorite TV show is ______. It makes my dad happy when ___________. I really love it when my dad ___________."  Include the same type of information for the child.
  • Examples of artwork created by the child.
  • Special items that the child wants to give dad (a special rock, button, toy, etc. with a note about why the item is special to the child and why s/he wants to share it with Dad.)

2) Family Tree

The second craft we love is a family tree. We always love handprints, and over the years, time has proven that the crafts that are "kept" - the ones that make it into the forever memory boxes - are the ones with handprints and footprints.

For this one you need:

  • Posterboard or canvas for background
  • blue, green, and brown washable paints
  • Black sharpie or black paint with brush to write

What to do:

  1. Lay out your canvas and paint the tree trunk, let dry.
  2. Have each family member paint their hand and then place a handprint on the tree.
  3. Let each print dry between prints.
  4. Personalize and frame if desired.

And there you have it - two very sweet and keep-able Father's Day gifts. Moms, if you have other links or ideas, feel free to post them in the comments below and we can all learn from each other!
